My Learnings On Burning Fake Leather

Here are my takeaways as a pyrography artist working with faux leather:

  • I quickly realized that it is more heat-sensitive than real ones, requiring caution to avoid damage or melting. The surface of these materials may deform completely when exposed to constant heat.
  • The smooth and consistent surface texture of PU made material made it challenging to create intricate designs, requiring adaptation of techniques and consistent pressure.
  • Dealing with the smell of burnt PVC and fumes (mostly toxic) emitted during burning when exposed to high temperatures necessitated working in a well-ventilated area and taking regular breaks.
  • Controlling the burning time and depth of burn marks on this fake material required experimentation to find the right balance and achieve desired shading and tonal variations.
  • Considering the durability and longevity of the surface was important, as burn marks or designs could wear off or fade over time with frequent use or harsh conditions.
  • The synthetic material may not have the same natural look and texture as real leather, this was a point of concern.
  • It is not as strong as real one, so it may not hold up as well over time to heavy use or wear and tear

Overall, working with it in pyrography pushed me to adapt, experiment, and learn from each experience. It was a rewarding journey that showcased the beauty and versatility of it in my artworks.

FAQs

What is faux leather made of?

It is is made from a plastic base mixed with wax, dye, and polyurethane.

Is leather pyrography safe?

Most real leathers, upon burning, don’t produce any toxic substances. However, for precaution, do this burn practice in a well-ventilated area while wearing masks. But faux leathers contain  polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyurethane (PU). These are nothing but plastic materials. You have to have a proper ventilation at the work place.
