Abstract Pyrography Art & 2 Easy Ways To Do It

Traditional pyrography arts come as a different art form that you can easily recognize with a name because they usually contain pictures of trees, woods, portraits, words, etc. But abstract pyrography art is nothing like that.

Abstract pyrography does not come with a perfect picture form. Using your imagination, you can just heat up the pyrography pen and let the pen take you ahead with a flow. That means you can burn anything, with or without requiring it to make sense or any prior design transformation.

Such freehand pyrography is quite popular because you can be a starter and still make various abstract wood burning projects. So let’s read ahead and find out more about abstract pyrography.

There is no hard and fast rule for abstract pyrography. You can pick anything that seems good to you, transfer it to wood, and burn it. If not, you can just go ahead and start burning wood however you like.

Nevertheless, here are two different methods for doing abstract pyrography on wood.

Method 1: Abstract Pyrography By Pattern Transfer/Tracing

Things You Will Need

  • A wooden piece (pine wood, birch wood, plywood etc.)
  • Burner tool
  • A burner pen
  • Multiple pen tip/nib
  • Design template
  • Pencil
  • Carbon/graphite paper
  • Masking tape

How To Do It

  • If you are not willing to try freehand abstract pyrography design, then you can use a printed one. It allows you to burn more easily if you are a beginner and unsure how to do it.
  • So either you can purchase an abstract design template or make one yourself and print it.
  • Attach the printed template with carbon/graphite paper onto the wooden piece by using masking tapes around it so that the template will not move.
  • Make sure to place the carbon paper right beneath the template. And it needs to be of the exact size of the template design so that you can cover all necessary areas.
  • You can also use a regular or graphite pencil to draw your abstract design on the wood without going through the pattern transfer hassle.
  • Then turn on your burner tool and let the burning pen heat up. You can start with a comparatively lower temperature setting to see how the design turns out.
  • Then start burning your abstract design however you choose.

Things You Will Need

  • A wooden piece (pinewood, birch wood, plywood)
  • Burner tool
  • A burner pen
  • Multiple pen tip/nib
  • Pencil (optional)

How To Do It

  • Freehand abstract pyrography does not require any prior pattern transfer or tracing with a pencil.
  • So you can start by preparing the wood and turning on your burner tool.
  • But as you prepare to burn wood without tracing or a particular design in mind, maintaining the right temperature can get a little trickier.
  • So turn the temperature to a low setting and heat the pyrography burner pen.
  • Once the pen has heated up, start burning the first line, curve or circle, etc., for your design.
  • Don’t worry if you find it hard how to begin. Since abstract pyrography does not really require to have a fixed pattern, you can move around with our burner pen however you like.
  • You can change the burner pen tip if necessary to achieve various shades, depths, and textures.

Tips For Doing Abstract Pyrography

  • Abstract pyrography is not necessarily required to be perfect. It does not even need to make sense. So the design outcome should be the least of your worry.
  • This type of pyrography does not have any hard and fast wood burning rules. So you can start from anywhere. Even if you are using a template, it is not necessary to follow everything.
  • However, it is always best to start from an edge and move around because it helps you burn evenly.
  • It is best to start with a razor edge pen tip to burn the design on wood. You can add other tips for shading and getting various textures.
