Technical Issues

My Eventful Journey

The Enchanting Eyes

  • I found capturing the essence and emotion of a horse’s eyes is the toughest of this pyrography
  • To be more precise, meticulously etching contours and shading of the realistic eye-balls and the eyebrows are tough. Bringing the eyes to life through precise woodburning strokes is risky to every artists, I am no exception.

Flowing Manes and Tails

  • Replicating the texture and movement of flowing manes and tails, delicate recreation of individual hair strands, maintaining sharp and precise lines, balancing realism and the light-dark contrast on the intricate patterns are my big concerns. A lot of practice made me go through it, but I stay very careful still now.

Fur Patterns

  • Translating the unique fur patterns of horses onto wood, controlling direction, length, and density of fur are nightmares for this art. Moreover, layering strokes to create a three-dimensional effect are my biggest strength.
  • I patiently craft the texture and realism of the horse’s coat. That’s the key to success, patience!

Powerful Nostrils

  • Capturing the prominence and powerful nostrils, representing accurate proportion and position, balancing precision and subtlety are extremely challenging job. Sometimes, I fail to bring the proportions, but most of the times I can do the job fairly.

Tips On The Process

  1. First of all, this is a task for someone who has at least intermediate-level skills. If you’re new to pyrography, it’s best not to attempt a realistic burn art project.
  2. For this project, you’ll need to shade a lot. Make sure you have a wide array of wire tips for shading.
  3. This project will take a long time– a few hours to multiple days– so stock up on patience!
  4. Stencils and transferring the outline to wood can only do a little help comparing to the finished outcome. For this project, you’ll need at least some rudimentary skills for freehand drawing.
  5. I usually advise burning the outline of the image first. However, in this case, I’d suggest working on the horse’s image section by section. I divide the image into a few rectangular blocks. It improves accuracy.
  6. Do not rush, and take frequent breaks to check the consistency of the section you’re shading with the reference photo. Keeping the shading consistent throughout the whole piece is also important.
  7. It’s very easy to burn a section too dark, so don’t lose patience. If you feel tired or agitated, leave and come back to the project with a fresh eye later.

However, if you find the task extremely difficult, you can watch the following video clip to learn easily about this majestic animal wood-burn arts.
