Pyrography on Felt Hat: a beautiful example of burn art

Pyrography is fundamentally a wood-burning art. And Pyrography on felt hat is the same but instead of wood, it is done on a felt hat.

The need to communicate our thoughts, aspirations, and perspectives has grown exponentially since humans first began drawing on cave walls. The extents and methods we utilize to create exceptional creations have no boundaries, as eras such as the Renaissance have demonstrated. Pyrography is no different.

How Pyrography on a Felt Hat is Done?

Commonly, a hat burning technique is nothing unusual than a regular pyrography. The common burning technique entails a burning and/or scorching material to engrave designs or patterns onto a specific workpiece. Here are the materials on which burn art can be applied:

  • Wood
  • Leather
  • Felt
  • Plastic
  • Bamboo

As you have probably realized by now, it necessitates a lot of practice and experimentation to master this technique. This may be truly the case for other fields of study like portrait painting or sketching, it’s slightly more difficult with a wood-burning art like pyrography.

Pyrography is a form of free-hand painting and sketching that involves burning an image into a material. This makes it possible for the artist to achieve an astonishing variety of colors and styles for the artwork, along with different pressures and temperatures.

The actual art of pyrography was only formally accepted around the seventeenth century and continued to expand in prominence and sophistication until the end of the 1800s, regardless of the fact that indigenous peoples have been practicing techniques like ash illustrations and scarification for countless years.

Things Required to Start

A Pyrography kit is among the items you could purchase to get started almost immediately. This kit usually includes everything you need but if you don’t have access to the kit then using individual parts will do the trick. The following are the things required for this exciting pyrography:

  • Pyrography Pen
  • Felt Hat
  • Paper Towel/Tissue Paper
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Safety Gear
  • Extra Paper

How to Burn a Felt Hat

Doing Pyrography on felt and wood is very similar. But as felt is a softer material than wood, there are certain things you need to be careful about. Let’s see how to do it.

Choose Correct Felt Hat Burning Tool

For pyrography on felt hats, the tool used is a bit different from the traditional hat torch used for simply removing fuzz. When this technique is applied to felt hats, it requires precision and control to create intricate designs without damaging the material.

Prepare the Workspace & Tools

Gather all the necessities for Pyrography on your desk so you don’t have to keep looking for things around. Make sure your room is well-ventilated and does not have any flammable items in there.

Prepare your Design

Before starting to use the burning pen directly on the hat, start sketching your desired art on a piece of paper. This would prevent you from doing any mistake on the hat as you cannot erase it. If you are confused with the design, there are hundreds of unique designs available on the internet and most of them are free. Take your time choosing the best design, as there are many.

Use your pencil to draw your desired art on the hat one by one. This is a smarter way to see how your art is going to look on the hat.

Connect the Pen

Connect the Pyrography pen to a power outlet and let it get hot. If the pen has adjustable power settings, start with the lowest. You can increase the power later if required.

Start The Burn Art

Once the pen is heated, use the pen to draw over the initial pencil sketch for a cleaner and better result. Make sure not to apply too much pressure on the pen or not to move the pen fast. With gentle pressure and slow movement, you can achieve your first perfect Pyrography on a felt hat.

Adjust the Temperature

The ability to adjust the temperature, for felt hat burning, is crucial. Felt can be sensitive to high heat, so having control over the temperature will help prevent accidental burns or damage to the hat.

During a particularly challenging pyrography session on a fine felt hat, I encountered an unexpected surge in the tool’s temperature. This led to a slight scorch mark on the brim, which initially seemed like a disaster. However, this mishap turned into a creative twist, as I incorporated the mark into a beautiful, sunburst design that became the centerpiece of the hat.
